Supporters of leading French football Olympique Marseille have announced they will cover their heads during a key cup match on Wednesday in solidarity with the city’s Jewish community.
The move follows an appeal by the Chief Rabbi of France Haim Korsia after a Jewish teacher was attacked outside a synagogue in Marseille last week.
The Marseille supporters’ club CCS said in a statement that it would call on all fans to wear « a head covering, a hat, a cap ». This act should be done “in order that we should never again be afraid to be who we are, that all our cultures are rich and for our freedom.”
The head of the supporters club told Le Monde: It’s necessary that everyone is aware that all this should stop.
It’s not normal that people should have to take off their kippot in order to walk around normally.”
